How to Convert Vhd To Wim Using PowerShell

If you want to create a custom Windows image for deployment with MDT, SCCM, or another solution, you may need to convert a virtual hard disk (VHD or VHDX) file to a Windows image (WIM) file. This can be done easily using PowerShell and some built-in tools in Windows.

In this article, we will show you how to convert a VHD or VHDX file to a WIM file using PowerShell. We will assume that you have already created a Hyper-V virtual machine with Windows installed and customized, and that you have run sysprep on the VM to prepare it for capture.

Step 1: Mount the VHD or VHDX file

The first step is to mount the VHD or VHDX file on your host computer. You can do this by double-clicking on the file, or by right-clicking on it and selecting "Mount". This will assign a drive letter to the virtual disk and make it accessible in File Explorer.

Step 2: Capture the WIM file using PowerShell

The next step is to use the New-WindowsImage cmdlet from the DISM module in PowerShell to capture the mounted virtual disk into a WIM file. You can open PowerShell as an administrator and run the following command:

New-WindowsImage -CapturePath <Drive_Letter_Where_sysprepped_VHD_is_Mounted> -Name <Name_You_Want_To_Call_the_Image> -ImagePath <Path_Where_You_Want_To_Put_The_Image_Including_WIM_File_Name>.wim -Verify

For example, if your mounted VHD is on drive D:, you want to name your image "Windows 11 Pro", and you want to save it to C:\Images\Win11.wim, you would run:

New-WindowsImage -CapturePath D:\ -Name "Windows 11 Pro" -ImagePath C:\Images\Win11.wim -Verify

This command will scan the mounted virtual disk, create a WIM file with the specified name and path, and verify its integrity. Depending on the size of your virtual disk and your host computer's performance, this may take some time.

Step 3: Dismount the VHD or VHDX file

Once the WIM file is created, you can dismount the VHD or VHDX file from your host computer. You can do this by right-clicking on the drive letter in File Explorer and selecting "Eject", or by running the following command in PowerShell:

Dismount-WindowsImage -Path <Drive_Letter_Where_sysprepped_VHD_is_Mounted> -Discard

This will unmount the virtual disk and discard any changes made to it. You can also delete the VHD or VHDX file if you don't need it anymore.

Conclusion

In this article, we showed you how to convert a VHD or VHDX file to a WIM file using PowerShell. This can be useful if you want to create a custom Windows image for deployment with MDT, SCCM, or another solution. You can also use other DISM cmdlets to modify, append, apply, or split WIM files as needed.
